Mayo High School will be the vibrant hub of musical talent on Friday, May 2, 2025, as it welcomes nearly 2,000 student musicians from all 12 Big 9 Conference schools for the 91st annual Big 9 Music Festival. This long-standing tradition, recognized as the longest-running music festival of its kind in the nation, promises a day filled with exceptional performances.
“It’s incredible to be a part of this 91-year history”, said Aaron Cole, band director at Mayo High School, who is leading the planning of the Big 9 Music Festival. “This festival has only taken time off for COVID and World War II.”
Throughout the day, 35 ensembles will showcase their musical prowess at both Mayo High School and Bethel Lutheran Church. Students, their families, and community members are invited to attend these performances, where the young musicians will receive valuable feedback from a distinguished panel of guest clinicians:
Dr. Colleen Chester: Assistant Professor and Director of Choral Activities at Winona State University.
Kelly DeMorett: An accomplished performer, educator, and conductor of the Minnesota Youth Symphonies’ Philharmonic Orchestra.
Dr. Erika Svanoe: A renowned conductor and composer for wind band, whose compositions have been performed by prestigious ensembles including the United States Marine Band, the United States Navy Band, the United States Air Force Band, and the National Concert Band of America.
The day will culminate in a grand Finale Concert at Mayo High School at 7:30 p.m. This performance will feature the Big 9 Select Band, Choir, and Orchestra, comprised of top student musicians selected from each participating school. These exceptional ensembles will perform under the direction of the guest clinicians.
The public is invited to attend this celebratory concert. Tickets are priced at $10 for adults and $6 for students and seniors and can be conveniently purchased online at https://mhs.rochesterschools.org/big-9-music-festival.
