Franklin Elementary School has enriched and engaged students and families throughout the school year. Catch up on some of the fantastic opportunities our students have had and are currently experiencing:
Free after-school enrichment program
Franklin's free after-school enrichment program, in partnership with Pamoja Women, provides students in grades 3-5 with expanded learning opportunities. Students have the opportunity to participate in diverse activities, including reading and math enrichment, basketball, soccer, STEM, crochet, and henna art.
Collaborative Community Mural
During a hands-on art and literature workshop in February, children and parents came together and used the power of story and community to make art that will stay with Franklin Elementary for years to come. The night began with community members listening to a reading of SONG IN THE CITY, written by Dan Bernstorn and illustrated by Jenin Mohammed. Afterward, community members collaborated in collaging places that make Franklin Elementary's community unique. The event was guided by special guest Jenin Mohammed, who shared her journey of becoming a kid-lit illustrator and demonstrated her art process. The four-by-eight-foot mural is finally done and will proudly be displayed at Franklin!
Youth bench building project
Our fifth-grade students worked to design and build three benches for our school in partnership with the ALC. They will begin the process of painting the benches soon!
Strategies for Success Parent Education Series
We launched Strategies for Success in partnership with Fernbrook Family Center and Timeout Behavior Coaching as a family resource. It is a series of free workshops available to parents that address a range of topics to help support their children, such as creating and maintaining routines, no-dramatic discipline, screen time, and sleep.
Swimming Program
In partnership with Rochester Swim Club, we offer free after-school swimming classes for Franklin students in K‑5 grade who need assistance accessing enrichment opportunities. Each session occurs at Willow Creek Middle School twice weekly for six weeks. Our session for students in grades 4-5 starts next week!
