RPS Student/staff highlight

Kara Merrill is an assistant principal at Dakota Middle School. She is a former RPS student who attended Gage Elementary, John Adams Middle School, and Century High School.

Why did you choose to work at RPS after attending RPS?

My favorite teacher, Mrs. Clark, mentored me from day one and inspired me to return to RPS. She was my teacher for two consecutive years and has always been one of my biggest supporters. I have also always had close ties to this community and believe in supporting the up-and-coming youth.

What's your favorite part about your RPS job?

I love the long-lasting relationships I build with students, families, and staff. I witness students' authenticity every day, and it inspires me to continue fostering success for all.

What is one thing that is noticeably different about RPS today than when you attended as a student?

The diversity in our district. Our community has really evolved over the past 30 years.

What aspect of RPS are you happy to see hasn't changed since you were a student?

I still run into teachers and staff who I remember from my school days, and that warms my heart.

What about your RPS education would you attribute to getting you where you are currently?

My involvement in a wide variety of clubs and teams grew my confidence and led me on my path to where I currently am.
