Former RPS Student/Current RPS Staff: Stevie Bertram

Stevie Bertram is a second-grade teacher at Pinewood Elementary. Stevie is a former RPS student who attended Golden Hill for kindergarten, Ben Franklin Elementary, Willow Creek Middle School, and Mayo High School.

Why did you choose to work at RPS after attending RPS?

My husband and I moved back to Rochester after spending a year in Arizona. We were wanting to start a family and there is no better place to raise a family than in Rochester. I wanted my children to attend the same awesome school district my husband and I both attended while growing up. I felt VERY fortunate to land a job in RPS when I did.

What's your favorite part about your RPS job?

As cliche as it sounds, the kids. They make coming to school every day so enjoyable! They are eager to learn and have fun with their friends. I also love all of the different people I have met through working at different schools!

What's a challenging part of your RPS job?

Lack of time. It always feels like there is more I could be doing but simply not enough time in the day to get it done while having a healthy work-life balance.

What is one thing that is noticeably different about RPS today than when you attended as a student?

Technology! I remember being SO excited to write on the overhead projector in elementary school!

What aspect of RPS are you happy to see hasn't changed since you were a student?

I feel that the school pride is still there! I am so proud to say I graduated from Mayo and that my children will also graduate from Mayo! I love seeing the dollar amount that the Spartans raise during GOFA every year, it's impressive! GO SPARTANS!

Who was an RPS teacher that had a positive impact on you and why?

Steve Willman (current principal at Elton Hills) was my 10th grade US History teacher. He is the reason I became a teacher! I loved going to his class, he made history fun to learn with constant jokes and "life lessons" thrown in throughout the class period. He also saw everybody as individuals and gave grace when it was needed. He exemplified compassion on the daily, something I strive for today with my own students.

What about your RPS education would you attribute to getting you where you are currently?

I had A LOT of really great teachers that showed care and compassion, while also pushing me to give my best and be my best self. If it weren't for these fantastic educators, I'm not sure where I'd be as I was not always the easiest student to have in class.
