Music in education is vital to a well-rounded learning experience. At Rochester Public Schools, students have the opportunity to:
Develop correct vocal and instrumental techniques
Understand melodic and harmonic singing
Know the elements of music
Use an instrument to experience performance, composition, and improvisation
Demonstrate proper concert etiquette
Demonstrate proper performance skills
Experience performance through band, orchestra, or chorus
Sixth graders have the option to choose between band, orchestra, and choir. In band, students can choose to play one of eleven instruments:
Baritone & Tuba
Clarinet
Flute
French Horn
Oboe and Bassoon (talk to your teacher for approval)
Percussion
Saxophone
Trombone
Trumpet
In orchestra, students can choose to play one of these four instruments:
Bass
Cello
Viola
Violin
Fifth grade music registration is now open until Friday, March 7, 2025. To register your student(s) for music in middle school, please fill out our Music Registration Form. Instruments can be purchased locally at Schmitt Music (1765 Highway 52 N, Rochester, MN 55901) or at The Music Mart (3552 West River Parkway NW, Rochester, MN 55901)
