As we conclude National School Counseling Week, we want you to meet Jamie Matson, from Mayo High School. Jamie would tell you that a “typical” day for counselors changes a lot throughout the school year, depending on where we are in the semester or what is happening in the building and community. Some days are filled with one-on-one post-secondary planning meetings with students, and other days are centered around connecting with students, families, and teachers to support students' academic and extracurricular success. Jamie’s favorite part about being a school counselor is helping students gain confidence in their choices and the path they’re taking.

Meet Tony Yang, a school counselor at Jefferson Elementary. Tony enjoys seeing students for who they are and having the privilege to meet them where they are. That can look like coping with big feelings or creating a space where they can express their individuality with their peers. One of his favorite things to do is lead Restorative Circles with students who may be in conflict with each other.
“We can wear many hats, but at the end of the day, school counselors are student-centered, meaning we have a responsibility to our students and their educational experience and needs.” - Tony Yang
